Research Projects

Summer 2021
SRA HCI Track, UC Santa Barbara

I successfully conducted a research project as part of the rigorous Summer Research Academies program at UC Santa Barbara during summer 2021. My project focused on providing people with motor dysfunctions improved access to virtual reality (VR) simulations that depict wheelchair movements.

I implemented a three-part system using the Unity Engine, incorporating the NavMesh object collision detection components, Filmbox particles, and an end objective to create an immersive and engaging wheelchair experience for users with motor disabilities. I utilized the concept of perceptual paradoxes to manipulate the view of users, providing them with a feeling of increased speed, smoothness, and maneuverability.

In addition to writing software for the VR package, I also delegated tasks for certain aspects of the development to my team members in the program. At the end of the rigorous internship, I presented our findings at the Capstone Seminar. My study results provide a preliminary understanding of how manipulating the peripheral perception of wheelchair users can positively change engagement levels and ease of use in VR settings.
